Sweet treats are the linchpin of every celebration. The perfect cake, dainty cake pops, or a lavish dessert display all bring a wow factor, both on the table and in your mouth. Jennifer Choi, owner of Sugarsuckle bakery knows this and has made it her mission to create delectable, beautiful desserts for any occasion.

What started by filling orders generated by word of mouth, has now expanded to a Hoboken-based storefront. Located at 600 Newark Street, Sugarsuckle’s newly opened shop means that Jennifer can do more baking with more ornate decorations than ever before, and it’s a good thing too as summer brings the celebration season.

Jennifer’s kitchen calling took a circuitous route to actualization. Jennifer always knew she enjoyed creative activities, but in college, she did the practical thing and studied STEM. Yet, while taking math and economics classes, she took art electives whenever possible. Fast forward to an unfulfilling job at a bank and a flourishing hobby as a baker, Jennifer decided to quit her job and go to pastry school._

Finally, after two years of baking as a side hustle, Jennifer took the plunge, establishing Sugarsuckle. She had a healthy roster of clients, including some of Hoboken’s premier event planners, so she knew she was making a product that people liked and was eager to bake full time.

At their core, Jennifer’s cakes are luxurious but simple. They come in four flavors: vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, and lemon, and they are topped with an Italian meringue buttercream icing comprised of just three things – egg whites, sugar, and butter. The cakes aren’t overloaded with excessive ingredients and are baked with attention and skill, resulting in a dessert that literally melts in your mouth – no greasy after taste, no flavor fatigue. “My goal is to create desserts that are simply delicious and beautifully styled in equal parts,” she says.

Jennifer often collaborates with friend and party planner extraordinaire Kristin Bufano of Serena & James Events who we recently featured here.

Not only are Jennifer’s cakes tasty, but they’re stunning. Often using softer colors as a base, she then employs calligraphy and an icing-based watercolor to decorate. She gives the cakes texture (ruffling is in) and frequently uses an edible gold leaf foil for an elegant look. The results are jaw dropping.
